In traditional Chinese medicine, qi is defined as a substance contains properties of motion and invisibility. It comes from 3 sources
1. Primordial qi ( Heredity)
2. Inhaled qi ( Air inhaled by lung)
3. Qi essence (Absorbed from food by spleen)

I. Symptoms of qi deficiency
1. Shortness of breath
2. Fatigue, loose stools
3. Dizziness,
4. Pale face,
5. Weakened voice/reluctance to speak,
6. Sweating with little exertion
7. Loose stool
8. Etc.

II. Causes of qi deficiency
1. Stomach abnormal function
Stomach is important to digest food when it enter the body. If stomach qi is deficiency or can not digestive food properly due to intake of raw foods or cold foods, etc. for a prolonged period of time, it will cause less qi to be converted, resulting in lessening the function of spleen in qi formation and distribution.

2. Spleen
After food is digested by the stomach, food qi and essences are absorbed by spleen. Intake of certain food and weakened parental qi will cause spleen qi deficiency that leads to not enough qi to perform its function in assisting liver and lung in qi distribution to the body.

3. Lung
Lung move qi in lung channels, if for what ever reason, lung is damaged due to smokes, diseases, etc. It can not perform its function in combining the qi from the spleen and inhaled qi from the air to move blood and fluids to the abdomen.

4. Liver
Liver is vital in blood formation and moving blood yin in blood vessels. If lung qi is deficient, it causes sluggish liver qi in moving blood to warm the uterus, leading to blood stasis and cold uterus.

5. Etc.

III. Treatments
A. With herbs
1.Ren shen (Ginseng)
Ren shen is considered as one of most powerful herbs in strengthening the original qi in the body. Besides improving the spleen function in qi absorption, thus reducing the symptoms of distended chest and abdomen cramps and pain, it also enhances the lung qi by moistening the channels.

2. Xi yang shen (American ginseng)
Besides promoting the lung and spleen qi, it also increases the digestive system in absorbing vital energy and reducing the heat causes of qi stagnation by moistening the all qi transportation channels.

3. Dang shen (Pilose asiabell root)
Dang shen is a spleen and lung tonic herbs. It improves the lung function in moving qi smoothly through its channels and spleen function in absorbing qi after foods entering the stomach.

4. Tai zi shen (Pseudostellaria root)
Besides helping to increase the spleen and lung qi, it also generates fluids to prevent the heat causes of qi stagnation.

5. Huang qi (Astragalus root)
It is one of the herb that helps to increase the function of liver in generating more blood and liver qi in blood transportation.

6. Etc.

B. With acupuncture
1. ST36 (Zu san li)
2.SP6 (San yin jiao)
3. KD3 (Tai xi)
4. LU9 (Tai yuan)
5. Etc.

C. With diet
1. Beef
2. Cherry
3. Chicken
4. Date
5. Goose
6. Grape
7. Sweet potato
8. Rice
9.Etc.

Since the balance of kidney yin and kidney yang is important in maintaining the kidney function in qi and fluid distribution, if it’ function is disrupted, pathological changes take place and illness occurs. Kidney yang deficiency in traditional Chinese medicine, is defined as condition of deficiency of vital yang energy due to intake of cool and cold or/ and working in cold environment for a prolonged period of time.

Since the yin phrase is dominated by yin with subordinated yang, deficiency of yang may increase the risk of fluid accumulation and lower body temperature thus decreasing BBT temperature in this phrase
I. Symptoms
1. Cold limbs
2. Pale tongue with white coating, pallor, soreness and
3. Weakness
4. Tiredness
5. Dizziness
6. Impotence,
7. Infertility
8.
II. Causes

1. Colding effect
Working in a cold environment or/ and eating cool and cold foods for a prolonged period of time will cause depletion of yang qi in the body as a result of yang qi constantly needed to counter the effect of cold in or/and outside the body, leading to kidney yang deficiency.

3. Excessive exercise
Exercise is yang in nature, moderate exercise helps to increase blood flow and distribute yang to the entire body, but rigid exercise causes over consumption of yang qi, leading to kidney yang deficiency.

4. Frequently sexual activity
Kidney Jing is vital for controlling the function of kidney in qi distribution. Since women are considered as yin in nature and sexual activity is the opposite. Frequently sexual activity drains the kidney jing and the yang in the body, leading to kidney jing and yang deficiency and the fall of BBT temperature.

5. Aging
Aging is a biological process that we can not stop. Although women is considered as dominate with yang subordinate, aging can cause depletion of yang qi slowly.

4. Spleen qi deficiency
If spleen qi is deficiency, it causes the inability of kidney function in fluid distribution, leading to generating of heat.

5. Etc.

III. Treatments
1. Herb
a) Chinese angelica roots (Dong qui)
It is one of most effective blood tonic herb. Whenever there are qi deficiency, it also causes blood deficiency.

Kidney yang is important in assisting liver in transform yin phrase to the yang phrase. As it rises to certain degree, it stimulates the softness of the uterine lining for the potential fertilized egg implantation. If the blood is stasis, it can not warm the uterine lining in providing the suitable environment for egg implantation even with the surge of yang, causing uterine lining out of phrase.

I. Symptoms
1. Abdominal sever or stabling cramps and pain
2. Dark complexion
3. Bleeding with clot
4. Purple lips
5. Purple nails
6. petechia on skin
7. Etc.

II. Causes
1. Chronic inflammation
The prolonged period of inflammation causes blood static as a result of increasing blood flow to inflammation regions and distorting the immune system in fighting against foreign bacteria and virus function, leading to blood stagnation.

2. Liver function
Liver is vital for blood formation and waste removal. Abnormal function of liver causes old estrogen or other hormones as well as old blood remaining in the body’s organs, leading to blood stagnation thus increasing the risk of menstrual irregularity and dysmenorrhrea.

3. Inability of respiratory function
If the lung is damaged for whatever reasons, it may affect the lung’s ability to move qi in the pathway of the meridian, leading to blood stagnation in the reproductive region.

4. Stress and depression
Stress and depression caused by an unexpected event can affect the liver function in regulating the psychosocial symptoms of the nervous system and physical symptoms of blood formation, leading to liver qi and blood stagnation that contribute to symptoms of dysmenorrhrea.

5. Unhealthy diet
Unhealthy diet high in saturated and trans fat affect the blood and qi movement, because it causes the building up of cholesterol in the blood stream, thereby reducing the lung’s function in regulating qi movement and the heart’s function in blood circulation.

III. Treatment
A. With herbs
1. Wolfberry fruit – (gou qi zi)
Although wolfberry fruit is neutral herb, it has a function to promote yin and yang harmonization, thereby decreasing the dryness of lung qi which causes the blood stagnation causes of abdomen cramps and pain.

2. Polygonum multiflorum – (he shou wu)
Fleence is said to help improve the liver function by eliminating the liver toxin accumulation and expelling the “wind” from the skin, thereby increasing the liver function in blood formation and transportation.

3. Longan – (long yan rou)
Logan is warm in nature, it has been used in traditional Chinese medicine in treating yang deficiency causes of blood stagnation due to inability of the heart in blood circulation.

4. White mulberry fruit – (sang shen)
White mulberry fruit is a blood tonic herb, it helps to tonify the blood, resulting in lessening the risk of blood stagnation causes of abdominal cramps and pain.

5. Angelica Root – (dang gui)
Angellica root is considered as a queen herb in TCM, beside helping to tonifies the blood, regulates the women menstruation and promotes blood flow to the abdomen.

Opposite to Kidney yin deficiency, yang is necessary for the liver to transform the yin energy to yang energy to promote the implantation of egg into the uterus and kidney is the main organ to regulate each step of the reproductive function. If there is not enough yang, it may cause prolong yin phrase as a result of our body needs time to perform each step of phrase I.

I. Symptoms

1. Cold and pain in the lower abdomen during or after menstruation
Since kidney yang is important to warm and support the uterus for a healthy conception, deficiency of kidney yang causes cold to accumulate in the womb which interferes with the normal function of the kidney in regulating the temperature of the uterus, leading to muscle contraction, resulting in lower abdominal cramps and pain.

2. Small volume of dark menstrual discharge
Spleen is important to assist the heart in transporting blood to the reproductive organs and to support the kidney in nourishing and moistening the body’s blood vessels. Deficiency of yang reduces blood and fluid in the reproductive organs, leading to a small volume of dark menstruation.

3. Weak and aching lower back and legs
Yang is necessary to support the daily activity in the body. Deficiency of yang causes constriction of the lower back and leg muscles.

II. Causes

1. Colding effect
Eating cold foods for a prolonged period of time will cause kidney yang deficiency. Cold foods are yin in nature, after entering the stomach, our body needs to provide more yang to digest it that depletes the yang qi.

2. Life style
Some people like to drink cold drink after taking straight from the refrigerator, eat raw foods, swim in a cold water, go out a lot in rainy weather or cold water, etc., they will cause extra yang produced by the body to counter the affect of the cold.

III. Treatments
1. Herbs
1. Lu rong
Lu rong is also known as deer antler, deer antler velvet, it is a great herb that helps to reduce the blockage of the meridian liver and kidney. Since yang qi deficiency is also caused blood deficiency, improving the body yang by strengthening the liver’s function in blood formation and kidney’s function in fluid distribution, it reduces the yang deficiency in the body.

2. Du Zhong
It is also known ecommia bark, it is one the most used herb to enhance the function of meridian kidney-liver by promoting the qi and blood formation. Since the liver is a organ in charge of blood storing and blood formation and kidney is in charge of fluid regulation, it increases blood flow to the entire body and reduces fluid accumulated in the body, thus enhancing yang.

3. Ba Ji Tian
Ba ji tian is also known as Chinese morinda root, sweet and warm in nature. It is also one the herbs used to strengthen the liver and kidney qi and blood yang by enhancing the liver in blood formation and kidney in urinary secretion, thus reducing the yang deficiency causes of abdominal distention, including cramps and pain during menstrual cycle.

The normal of yang phrase of menstrual cycle accordingly to traditional Chinese medicine can not be shorter then 10 days. But for what ever reason, some women experience the luteal phrase defect because of excess heat leading to infertility.

I. Symptoms of excessive heat
1. Insomnia
2. Red face
3. Constipation
4. Nightmare
5. Fever
6. Anxiety
7. Thirst
8. Etc.

II. Causes
1. Liver qi
Liver qi is important in assisting the heart to move blood in the blood vessels. Liver qi abnormal function causes sluggish blood flow or out of control blood flow, leading to excessive heat and abundant yang.

2. Blood stasis
Constant blood flow is important in nourishing our body cells, tissues and organs. If blood is stasis, qi needs to push harder to move blood, leading to blood clot and heat.

3. Kidney yin deficiency
Kidney yin deficiency causes less moister to be distributed to the body, leading to heat being generated that distorts the liver function in yin and transformation.

4. Excessive yang
Excessive yang can be caused by intake of spicy and hot food, leading to the rise of yang that quickly triggers the function of liver in transform yang to yin resulting in shortened yang phrase that not allows the uterine lining to preform its function in egg implantation.

III. treatments
A. With herbs
1. Bu gong yin (Dandelion)
Bu gong yin is cold in nature and used to clear toxic body heat and liver heat by strengthening the liver and stomach channels.

2. Mi meng hua (Buddleia flower bud)
the herb is cool in nature and used to tonify the liver and lower liver heat by enhancing the function of liver channel.

3. Qing xiang zi (Celosia seeds)
this herb is also cool in nature and used to to drain liver fire, clear heat and wind by promoting the function of liver channel as well.

4. Jue ming zi (Cassia seed)
Jue ming zi has been used in traditional Chinese medicine in clearing liver heat, moistening the Intestines and promoting bowel movement by strengthening the liver and intestine channels.

5. Han shui shi
It has a function in clearing heat and dispersing fire in the body by strengthening the liver channel.

7. Etc

B. With acupuncture
Suggested acupuncture points
1. LV3 (Tai chong)
2. ST41 (Jie xi)
3. SP10 (Xue hai)
4. KD6 (Zhao hai)
5. Etc.

C. With foods
1. Cucumber
2. Apple
3. Barley, bean curd
4. Chicken egg white
5. Chinese wax gourd
6. Oyster
7. Pear,
8. Peppermint
9. Spinach
10. Eggplant
11. Etc.
